Понятие, исторически возникшее в практике проведения аукционов, где означает минимальную цену, по которой продавец соглашается продать выставленный на продажу лот. Это относится к так называемой  Голландской или Нидерландской системе (Голландский аукцион), где сначала устанавливается высокая цена и она снижается до тех пор, пока не находится покупатель. При этом продавец определяет цену отсечения, нижний предел стоимости лота; ниже данного предела он продавать лот не будет. Постепенно понятие цены отсечения распространилось на публичные торги ценными бумагами акционерных обществ, в том числе –- первичное размещение (IPO), на распространение государственных облигаций (в России – известных ГКО). Последние годы особый общественный интерес вызывает Цена отсечения для доходов от нефти и газа. Это цена, свыше которой доходы нефтегазовой отрасли отправляются в резервный фонд государства. Возможны разные методы исчисления такой цены. Например, ее рассчитывают как среднюю за сколько-то лет (10 лет, 5 лет и т.д.) или как скользящую, пересчитываемую каждый год. От объявленной цены отсечения в высокой степени зависит государственный бюджет, возможности государственных расходов, а значит, и судьба социальных и иных программ, вырабатываемых правительством.
